It decomposes in acid to precipitate silica. Potassium silicate is commonly used in the manufacture of welding rods, electrodes for welding, vat dyes, and fire retardants. In the stable state, it is a non-toxic, odorless, transparent, viscous liquid. Soluble in water and acid, insoluble in alcohol.
